How to Keep Students Engaged During Long Lectures
Two and three-hour teaching blocks are now normal, and the standard advice for them, break every ten to fifteen minutes because attention collapses, is based on a claim that does not survive checking. What the evidence supports is different, and more demanding: change what students have to produce, not how often you pause.

Is the 10-minute attention rule true?
Every teaching workshop repeats it: concentration fails after 10 to 15 minutes, so chunk your lecture.
Two papers went looking for the evidence.
Wilson and Korn (2007) reviewed the underlying studies, including note-taking research, classroom observation, self-reports and physiological measures, and concluded they do not establish a specific attention span and largely ignore individual differences.
Bradbury (2016) traced the citation chain and found the primary data does not support a 10–15 minute limit; the most-cited source "barely discusses student attention at all". The finding that should change your practice is that the greatest variability came from differences between teachers, not from the format.
Which means the chunking rule was aimed at the wrong variable. A timer does not fix a lecture; changing what the room is doing does.
(And if you meet the "8-second attention span, shorter than a goldfish" claim: there is no study. The goldfish comparison appears to have been invented.)
What actually holds attention over three hours?
Interruption by demand, not by pause. Szpunar, Khan and Schacter (2013, PNAS) inserted brief tests through a 21-minute video lecture. Students tested at intervals were:
- half as likely to report mind-wandering,
- three times as likely to take notes,
- and retained significantly more.
The mechanism is the expectation of being asked, which changes attention throughout, rather than the interruption itself. A pause where nothing is required of anyone does not produce this.
Caveat: video lecture, laboratory setting. The mechanism is well supported; the effect size in a live three-hour block is not established.
How often should the room change what it is doing?
Chi and Wylie's framework ranks cognitive engagement from Passive through Active and Constructive to Interactive. Over a long block, the practical question is not "how long since the last break?" but "how long since the room left Passive?"
Aim to leave Passive every 10 to 20 minutes. Not because attention expires on a schedule, but because sustained one-directional input has nothing in it that requires a student to stay oriented.
Why does re-entry matter more in a long block?
Over three hours everyone drifts. The compounding problem is that a student who has drifted cannot ask what they missed without revealing that they drifted, so they don't, and the gap widens for the remaining two hours.
A no-cost way to signal "I'm lost" is worth more in a long block than in a short one, precisely because there is more time left to lose.
How should you structure a three-hour block?
Not a chunking rule, a mode rotation.

Input still occupies about 50 of the 180 minutes. The room never goes more than 15 minutes without producing something, and there are two real breaks, taken because people need them rather than because a timer says attention expired.
What else matters in a long block?
Breaks are for recovery, not attention repair. Take them. Just don't expect one to undo forty minutes of one-directional input.
Vary the mode, not just the medium. Swapping your voice for a video is Passive followed by Passive. Nothing changes.
Front-load the hard material only if the room is fresh. After two hours the demand is what carries attention, not the difficulty.
Watch for the second-hand distraction effect. Sana, Weston and Cepeda (2013) found students multitasking on laptops scored lower on comprehension, and so did students merely in direct view of them. Over three hours this compounds. The best answer is not a ban; it is giving the device a job.
Get a real signal before the last hour. In a long block there is still time to change course. Ask something diagnostic before the second break, when acting on the answer is still possible.
What the evidence does not show
- That there is an attention-span number. No study establishes a reliable average. Anyone quoting one is quoting a myth.
- That breaks improve learning outcomes. They are justified by recovery and humane treatment; the learning claim is not well evidenced.
- That long lectures are inherently worse. Format matters less than what is required of students within it.
- That response systems raise grades. Hunsu et al. (2016) found a small effect on cognitive outcomes and a near-medium effect on engagement and attention. For a long block the second half is the relevant one, but say which you are claiming.
