How to Make PowerPoint Presentations Interactive
Start with what PowerPoint already does, because it is more than most people realise and it costs nothing extra. Then add a tool only for the two things it genuinely cannot do. In that order, this takes about fifteen minutes to set up.

What can PowerPoint already do?
More than most articles on this question admit, and all of it is already paid for if your institution has Microsoft 365.
Live Presentations. Present, then Present Live. PowerPoint puts a QR code on screen. The audience scans it and the deck opens in their browser, with nothing to install.
What they get, per Microsoft's documentation as of 9 August 2026:
- The slides on their own device, with pinch-to-zoom
- Live subtitles, translated into their preferred language
- The ability to navigate back to a slide they missed
- Live reactions sent to you
The presenter needs a Microsoft 365 subscription. The audience does not.
The translated-subtitles feature is genuinely excellent and under-used. In a lecture with international students it may be the single highest-value thing on this page.
Polls through Microsoft Forms. Insert, then Forms. Build a question, drop it into a slide. The audience answers by QR code or short URL and results update live.
Native, included, no third-party tool. For simple multiple-choice checks this is sufficient.
Which design changes cost nothing?
- One idea per slide. If a slide has two headings, it is two slides.
- Ask the question before the reveal. Put the graph on the next slide, not the same one, so the room has to predict.
- Leave a step blank in a worked example.
- Insert deliberate stopping points, a slide with a single question on it and no answer.
None of these require software. They change what the room has to produce, which per the ICAP framework is what actually determines cognitive engagement.
How do you make the interactivity count?
Here is where most "interactive PowerPoint" advice goes wrong: it adds features without changing what students produce.
Chi and Wylie's ICAP framework ranks engagement from Passive through Active and Constructive to Interactive. Apply it to your own slides:

The pattern is consistent: questions with defensible wrong answers beat questions about feelings. "Is everyone following?" produces a sentiment; "which of these two is right?" produces a diagnosis.
The single best upgrade is peer instruction. Take any concept slide and convert it:
- A multiple-choice question with plausible wrong answers
- Everyone answers
- Discuss with a neighbour who chose differently
- Everyone answers again
- Reveal and explain
Crouch and Mazur (2001) reported ten years of Harvard introductory physics with normalised learning gains roughly twice those of traditional lecture. The re-vote is the intervention, and skipping it is the most common failure.
Aim for questions where roughly 30 to 70% get it right first time. If everyone gets it, there is nothing to discuss.
What can PowerPoint not do?
Two gaps, as of the check date, and both are structural rather than matters of configuration.
There is no question queue. Live reactions are one-directional sentiment. There is no way for students to submit written questions throughout and up-vote each other's, so the question nine people share surfaces above the one typed fastest.
This matters more than it sounds. Over half of students in large science courses never ask or answer a question all semester (Cooper et al., 2021), and the driver is fear of peer judgement, so the students you most need to hear from need a written, anonymous channel or they will not appear at all.
There is no per-slide comprehension signal. Forms polls give you results per question. What a lecturer wants is a running signal tied to the slide that caused the difficulty, visible while teaching, and a picture afterwards showing where the room struggled across the whole session.
What does a fifteen-minute setup look like?

That is a measurably more interactive lecture without installing anything.
What the evidence does not show
- That interactive slides raise grades. Hunsu et al. (2016), 53 studies and more than 26,000 participants, found a small cognitive effect and a near-medium engagement effect.
- That animation or multimedia helps. Both are Passive under ICAP.
- That gains persist. The 2025 systematic review found no delayed post-tests in the literature it reviewed.
