How to Run a Mock Exam for Your Class

One clock, one room, marked answers and a class report. How to run a mock exam your group can sit together.

A mock exam sat together is a rehearsal: the same clock for everyone, the same paper, and a result the whole class can learn from. It asks more of the host than a homework quiz, mostly in the marking. A Diaposi exam session builds the paper from your own course files, runs one clock for the room and grades every paper out of 20.

Why sit a mock exam together?

A quiz done at home tells each person their own score. A mock exam sat together, under one clock, tells you how the class stands: which chapters are solid, which question caught everyone out. It also rehearses the conditions of the real exam, which is the part people cannot practise alone.

How do you prepare it?

  1. Choose the content. The chapters of the real exam, in the same proportions.
  2. Choose the length. A full paper if you have the slot, a shorter one at the same pace if not.
  3. Read every question first. Check each answer and what each question is worth before anyone sees the paper.
  4. Set the rules. Named or anonymous, what is allowed on the desk, what happens to latecomers.

What do you do with the results?

Mark fast: a mock exam returned two weeks later teaches little. Then go through the answers with the class, question by question, starting with the ones most people missed. Look at the results by chapter before you plan the remaining sessions.

Participants can prepare on their own with a mock exam from their lecture notes, and what a mock exam is and how to use one is worth sharing with them.

How a Diaposi exam session helps

The waiting room of a Diaposi mock exam: the QR code, and the participants arriving.

A Diaposi exam session builds the paper from up to 6 of your course files and lets you read and edit every question before the room opens. Participants join with a QR code. One clock runs for everyone, extra time can be given to one participant privately, and every paper is handed in when its time is up. Written answers are marked criterion by criterion, and the class is graded out of 20.

Frequently asked questions

How long before the real exam should a class sit a mock exam?

Early enough to act on the result. Two to four weeks before the exam leaves time to revisit the weak chapters. A mock exam the day before only measures.

Should a class mock exam be anonymous?

It can be. An anonymous sitting lowers the stakes and still gives the class picture by question and by chapter. A named one lets the host follow up with individuals. Say which it is before the paper starts.

Is Diaposi free?

Yes. Diaposi is free, and there is no paid plan today.
