How to Keep a Large Lecture Engaged

Hundreds of people, one speaker. Polls, anonymous questions and neighbour discussion that scale to a full lecture hall.

A large auditorium seen from above, most of its seats taken

In a hall of several hundred people, raised hands stop working: few people dare, and you cannot count them anyway. Phones do scale. With Diaposi Session, the whole hall joins from a QR code, answers the same poll at once and sends questions anonymously, and your join code stays on screen for latecomers.

What breaks at 100 people?

Raised hands, first. In a large hall few people dare, and you cannot count the ones who do. Eye contact goes next: you see the first rows and guess the rest. And one person speaking takes the whole hall’s time. Everything that works in a seminar room needs a version where everyone answers at once.

What scales to a full hall?

  • Phones instead of hands. A poll gets an answer from the back row as easily as from the front.
  • Neighbour discussion. Fixed rows still allow pairs. Two minutes with the person in the next seat, then a second vote.
  • Anonymous questions. With upvotes, the hall sorts its own questions and you answer the ones most people share.
  • A visible way in. Keep the join code on screen for latecomers.

What does a ten-minute block look like?

Six or seven minutes of explanation, a one-minute poll on the idea just covered, two minutes of neighbour discussion if the result is split, and a second vote. Then the next block. The structure repeats, which is the point: the hall learns the routine and stops needing instructions.

The individual techniques are in how to make a lecture interactive, and the quietest seats are covered in how to get quiet participants to join in.

How Diaposi Session helps

A Diaposi Session at a glance: the deck, the join code, a quiz, anonymous questions, the class pulse, a word cloud poll and the session report
A Diaposi session: the deck, the join code, the polls, the questions and the report.

In Diaposi Session, the whole hall joins from a QR code with no account, and your join code stays on screen for the whole session, even while a poll is running. Everyone answers the same poll at once, questions come in anonymously and are voted up, and a slim line under your slide shows at a glance how the hall is taking what is on screen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep a large lecture from using phones for something else?

Give the phone a job every few minutes. A device with a poll to answer and a slide to follow is a tool. One with nothing to do is a distraction.

Does neighbour discussion work in fixed seating?

Yes. Pairs need no movement: each person turns to the next seat. Keep it to two minutes and follow it with a vote, so the discussion has a purpose.

Is Diaposi free?

Yes. Diaposi is free, and there is no paid plan today.
