How to Make a Practice Test From Your Notes

Turn your own slides, PDFs and notes into a practice test, then use it the way that works: test, check, space, repeat.

Testing yourself teaches you more than reading your notes again, because it shows what you can actually pull out of memory. A practice test needs three things: questions on your own material, a clock, and an honest correction. This guide covers all three. A Diaposi mock exam builds the paper from your own course files and grades it out of 20.

Why test yourself instead of rereading?

Rereading feels productive because the page looks familiar. Familiar is not the same as known. A practice test asks you to produce the answer with the notes closed, which is exactly what the exam will ask. It also tells you where to spend your next hour, which rereading never does.

How do you build the test?

  1. Choose your sources. The slides, the handouts and your own notes for the chapters the exam covers, and nothing else.
  2. Write or generate the questions. Turn each heading into a question, or let a tool draft them and check them: turn a PowerPoint or PDF into a quiz.
  3. Mix the formats. Multiple choice checks recognition, a written answer checks whether you can explain. A mock exam from your lecture notes uses both.
  4. Set a time limit. The same one as the real exam, or a share of it.

How do you sit it and use the result?

Sit it like the exam: notes closed, timer running, no pausing. Then mark it honestly and sort your mistakes by chapter, not by question. The weakest chapter is where you study next.

Come back to the same chapters a few days later with new questions. A spaced repetition study schedule tells you when, and active recall covers the days in between. If your notes are thin, start with how to take notes on lecture slides.

How a Diaposi mock exam helps

A Diaposi mock exam does the building for you. Drop in up to 6 of your own course files, choose the chapters and the level, and sit a timed paper one question at a time. You get a grade out of 20, every correction with its source in your course, and what to revise next, weakest chapter first. Sit it again and you can ask for new questions on the same chapters.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a practice test have?

Enough to cover every chapter the exam covers, and few enough to sit in one go. For most courses that is 15 to 30 questions in 30 to 60 minutes. A test you finish and mark is worth more than a longer one you abandon.

Is a practice test better than flashcards?

They train different things. Flashcards suit facts and definitions, and a practice test suits applying ideas under time pressure. Most exams need both.

Is Diaposi free?

Yes. Diaposi is free, and there is no paid plan today.
