Practice Tests vs Flashcards: Which to Use and When

Flashcards suit facts, practice tests suit applying ideas. When to use each and how to combine them before an exam.

Flashcards and practice tests both make you retrieve what you learned, but they train different things. A card suits a fact, a date, a definition. A test suits applying an idea to a new case, under time pressure. Most exams need both. In Diaposi, a self quiz covers the chapters you choose, and a mock exam rehearses the whole paper.

What does each one train?

A flashcard trains you to produce one fact on cue: a term, a date, a formula. A practice test trains you to choose what applies, combine ideas and write an answer against the clock. Both make you retrieve what you learned, which is why both beat rereading. They differ in what they retrieve.

When does each one fit?

  • Flashcards fit vocabulary, definitions, formulas and dates: anything with one short answer you must know cold.
  • A practice test fits problems, cases, comparisons and “explain why” questions: anything where the work is deciding what to use.
  • Flashcards fit short gaps. Ten minutes on a train.
  • A practice test needs a slot. Thirty minutes at a desk, uninterrupted.

How do you combine them?

Use cards during the weeks of the course, a few minutes a day, so the facts are in place. Add practice tests as the exam approaches, one or two a week, then sort your mistakes: a missed fact becomes a card, a missed method becomes another test. The usual mistake is to stay with cards because they feel productive. Knowing every definition does not mean you can use them.

The method behind both is in active recall with lecture notes, and the full routine is in how to make a practice test from your notes.

How a Diaposi self quiz helps

In Diaposi, a self quiz covers the chapters you choose from your own PowerPoint, PDF or Word notes and shows every right answer in its report. A mock exam rehearses the whole paper against the clock, graded out of 20. Both are made from the same files, so moving from single chapters to full papers does not mean starting again.

Frequently asked questions

Are flashcards or practice tests better for an exam with essays?

Practice tests. Essays ask you to organise ideas, which cards cannot train. Cards still help for the terms and the references an essay needs.

How many practice tests should I take before an exam?

Two or three full ones, spaced over the last weeks, with the mistakes worked through between them. More tests without that work add little.

Is Diaposi free?
